Located in a collective housing building in Olivais, Lisbon, the apartment was composed of a very compartmentalized plant. With small areas, the rooms did not allow for comfort, and the connections between the various rooms did not suit the current needs of everyday life. The infrastructures presented technical weaknesses, not supporting the use of the necessary equipment to the functionality of the spaces. The client wanted to provide the apartment with good thermal and sanitary conditions, through fluid spaces that harmoniously integrated the areas and elements of storage. The intervention should also respond to the possibility of growth of the family nucleus, and should be projected to the future needs of the clients. Although the support structure of the building allows to suppress or add partition walls, one of the areas of the apartment is constituted by structural walls that conditioned the sequence of the compartments.
The intervention allowed for a hierarchizing of the compartmentalization through two large functional areas: a private and a social one, each one being served by different accessibilities from the entrance to the apartment. The private area contains a bedroom and a suite, which is served by closet and toilet facility. The social area has an open space configuration where the spaces of living, meal, food preparation and storage are connected.
